The Crew Takes New York City

What. A. Weekend.  It was so fun and exciting and exhausting and fascinating!

I don't even know where to begin, it was that good.  So I could keep continuing on with my rambling and keeping you in suspense (What did she do?  What did she see? How many weirdos did she encounter?), but I suppose I'll jump right in to this unnecessarily detailed post.  Also, because some famous people live in NYC (such as Taylor Swift), I'm going to pretend that I'm famous and that someone is conducting an interview with me, because I like to pretend I'd be important enough for that.

I'm a College Kid: So Kasey, we hear you went to New York this weekend and we'd love to hear all about it.  Mind if we ask you a few questions?

Kasey: I don't mind at all! I'm flattered that you're interested and would love to tell you all about it.

IaCK: That's very gracious of you, we know how busy you are.  First: why did you go to NYC?

K: My dear friend Chloe has been in New York for almost a month now for a fashion/design internship.  My other dear friend, Katie, and I decided to go up there for a long weekend to visit her!  We stayed at her apartment for the weekend and packed a lot in to a few days!

IaCK: Awesome! What was Chloe's apartment like?

K: Only the coolest apartment I've ever seen in my life. It was in a former cork factory in Brooklyn and it was nice and big and open with exposed brick--my favorite!  It was 2 bedrooms and she and 5 other girls from Oklahoma State are sharing it for the summer. The apartment was beautiful and all her roommates were super cool and very welcoming of us.

IaCK: So what did you do on Thursday?

K: I drove up to O'Hare after work on Thursday and met up with Katie for our flight.  By the time we landed in LaGuardia and took a cab to Chloe's, it was after midnight and we were pooped! We met one of Chloe's roommates (the rest were asleep) and set up our sleeping bags and blankets and fell asleep.

IaCK: Friday?

K: We were up and at 'em early on Friday morning because Katie and I went to see Jason Derulo perform in Central Park for Good Morning America!  We took the subway to get there, and thank goodness for Katie and Chloe's iPhones and the app "HopStop" because we got there without a hitch. When we got to Central Park around 8 or 8:30, we were pretty close to the stage and could see Jason very well!  We were also on TV for a little while!  Katie and I wandered around the park for awhile (there were so many babies and small children) and ate some delicious muffins at a place called Sunberry Cafe while we waited for Chloe to get off work.  When she was done, she met us near the park and we ate lunch at another little cafe called E.A.T. We walked around a couple little shops and then headed back to hang out at the apartment for a little while.

That night, we met up with the rest of Chloe's roommates at a restaurant in Chinatown and ate dinner.  We had wanted to go out that night too, but we realized we were going to be way too exhausted, so we ended up going back to the apartment and crashing by like 10:30 (we all got to share the big king bed that night) and didn't wake up until after 9 the next day.

IaCK: Sounds pretty crazy!  What was your Saturday like?

K: After sleeping in pretty late, we forced ourselves out of bed so we could go to this doughnut shop Chloe and her roommates were obsessed with. Here I am, thinking, "What's the big deal? It's just doughnuts," and limping along with the blisters from yesterday. Little did I know, my life was about to change.

The place was called Peter Pan and let me tell you, THEY HAVE THE BEST DOUGHNUTS IN THE WORLD.  I will shout it from the rooftops and I don't care who thinks I'm crazy (I know Katie does).  They tasted so freaking delicious and they were so cheap!  I will list the ones I had all weekend below and will only feel semi-ashamed:

  • Chocolate cake
  • Blueberry buttermilk
  • Chocolate coconut
  • Red velvet
  • Apple crumb
  • Honey-dipped cruller
That's right, people, I ate a ton of doughnuts, but whatever, it happens.

IaCK: Okay then...I guess you really liked those doughnuts, huh? *Nervous laugh.* What else did you do that day?

K: We went back to Chloe's apartment and hung around and laid in bed and watched Vines for most of the afternoon because we were too tired from the previous day's festivities. We went to a place called Vinny's pizza for lunch where I got a slice of pizza with macaroni and cheese, bacon, and sour cream and it was muy delicioso.  We watched some American Ninja Warrior with one of Chloe's roomies, and then we got ready so we could make our reservation at Beauty & Essex. We took the subway, and unfortunately it broke down due to electrical issues.  We scrambled off and luckily this super friendly guy pointed us in the right direction to make it to the next train, so even though we were a little late, we finally made it! The restaurant was a speakeasy during prohibition, so the entrance is a functioning pawn shop, and then you go through the door in the wall to get to the actual restaurant.  It was really nifty and posh!  The food was tapas style (not 'topless' as we heard it) so it was little appetizers and things meant to share.  Katie and I shared these tomato, bacon, cheese dumplings (party in my mouth) and lobster mac n cheese.  I also got this Elvis Presley sundae for dessert (which also had bacon, and I am only now realizing how much bacon I actually ate that day).  The best part?  Free champagne (champs) in the bathroom!  Woohoo!

When we left the restaurant, Katie, Chloe and I headed over to Time's Square to see it at night.  It was packed!  We took some touristy pictures, walked by Chloe's work building, and walked around the 4 story Forever XXI store.  Then we made our way back to Brooklyn to a very hipster bar called Spritzenhous where everyone was playing Jenga (??).  It was super cute with all these little lights and stuff around the room, and I also found out I like strawberry beer.  It was great getting to talk with the girls and hang out with them.  We went to McDonald's for some late night food after that (a McDonald's without a drive-thru...what a strange concept) and then headed back home to sleep.

IaCK: Sounds like fun!  How was Sunday?

K: On Sunday we got more doughnuts and then went to the American Museum of Natural History.  We walked around for a couple hours looking at some cool stuff (like a giant whale hanging from the ceiling) and Katie made a hilarious tourist video at a little stand in the museum too. We stopped for even more doughnuts on the way home, and once we got back, Katie and I had to leave to catch our flight.  By the time we landed in Chicago and I drove back to West Lafayette, it was already past midnight and I had to work at 7 the next morning!  Seriously, it was such an incredible weekend though.  I am so in love with that city and I loved getting to share it with some of my favorite people!

IaCK: Anything else you'd like to share with the readers?

K: I'd just like to give a shoutout to Katie for coming up with some awesome ideas for what to do while in New York and being so organized.  You are an awesome travel partner!  Also, shoutout to Chloe for letting us stay with you and taking us to all the cool places.  I am so proud of you for your success so far in NYC and can't wait to see you again! Also, my apologies to all my readers who are puking at the though of all the food I ate this weekend, but hey, when you're in New York and are walking over 30,000 steps a day, I think it's pretty justifiable ;)

100th Post!

Three years ago, I had this idea that I would start a blog to document my college experiences.  I thought, Hey, I like to write.  Why not?  I figured it would serve as a way to keep my family up to date about the shenanigans I participated in during "The Best 4 Years of My Life," so I'm a College Kid was born.

You see, though the original purpose of this site was to update family, the blog quickly became my journal of sorts.  If you're a Harry Potter fan, it became my own version of a pensieve, a place where I could dump my thoughts and save them in words so I could come back and read them later and remember. I love going back to posts from freshman year and reminiscing...and I also cringe about all the stupid/hilarious things I did.

And here we are.   Three years later and this is the 100th post.  I seriously can't believe how fast time has gone and how many things I've felt the need to document!  I guess I want to use this post for a couple things: 1. To take a walk down memory lane, and 2. To say thanks to everyone who has read the blog.

So first, THANK YOU.  To anyone who has ever taken a second out of their day to click on the link that I am constantly blowing up Facebook with: you don't know how much I appreciate it.  Just knowing some people are reading it here and there encourages me to continue documenting my college life, even though it can get tedious at times (I've never been known to write in a succinct, concise way...sue me).  I can't explain it (okay, I can; it's an ego boost), but it always excites me when someone says, "I read your blog the other day."  I would like to give a special shoutout to my top "followers," the ones who (as far as I know) stay most up to date on it:

My mom and dad
My grandma Barb and grandma Vi
Sydney Satoski
Annie Dooley
Jess Wolf
Tyler Brown

You guys rock and I love you!

Now for a walk down memory lane and some random blog statistics since the first post 3 years ago:

We Don't Need No Man: Camping and Other Summer Shenanigans Thus Far.

Summer is in full swing, ladies and gentlemen!

Actually, that's a lie.  Summer doesn't officially start until June 21, but hey, who's keeping track anyway?

But when school's away, the students will play, and let me tell you: there has been lots to do so far.  In fact, I haven't even spent a weekend in my apartment the last 4 weeks!  Here is a quick rundown of how my summer has transpired so far:

1. Scholastic Book Fair
Annie and I drove down to Indy once school was out to hit up the Scholastic warehouse. We got a ton of books for our future classroom libraries for super cheap!  "Super Cheap" is a teacher's middle name.

2. Mother's Day
Hooray, hooray for Mother's Day!  I loved getting to spend time with my mama.  We all went out to brunch at Flat Top Grill with my grandparents and uncle too, and it was lovely getting to spend time with them.

3. Jenna's Bridal Shower
Jenna, my friend from high school, is getting married in August, so Katie and I went to her bridal shower a couple weekends ago.  We hadn't seen her in a long time since she goes to school in Utah, but it was great catching up with her.  She will be a beautiful bride!

My pretty friends :)

4. Tyler's Graduation Party
Tyler, my neighbor across the street, aka my second little sister, just graduated from high school!  I'm so glad I was able to come home to celebrate with her at her graduation party.  I can't believe she's getting ready to start college--I'm so proud of the beautiful young woman she's grown into!  You go, Ty!

Happy graduation, Ty!

5. Starved Rock
Over Memorial Day weekend, Lush and I went hiking in Starved Rock, and it was absolutely beautiful!  The weather was perfect and it was so much fun taking the trails there.  We also got to stop by my uncle's Memorial Day party on the way home, so I got to see my family and family friends some more.  It was wonderful :)

6. Neighborhood Dinner
Each summer, the Pine Meadows crew gets together to take pictures and go out to dinner.  We took pictures (wearing our college shirts since we're all in college now) and then went to El Toro to eat a bunch of Mexican food. Afterwards, we stayed up late playing a hilarious round of Cards Against Humanity.  I couldn't have asked for a better group of girls to grow up with and am so glad that we are still best friends :)

7. Kourt's Birthday
Little sis turned 19 last weekend!  Even though she had to work on her birthday (boo), we were able to go to Cracker Barrel for breakfast together first.  I can't believe this is her last year as a teenager...gasp!

8. Camping
What happens when you put 4 twenty-something women together in the middle of nowhere with a tent and some matches?

Success.

Did you think I was going to say disaster?  Because that's how we thought it'd end up, let me tell you.  But anyway, Syd and I drove up to the campsite at Raccoon Lake after work on Friday and met Elaine there.  We definitely thought any and everything would go wrong, because Syd and I had never been camping without males before (not tryna be sexist here) and we weren't really sure what we were doing.  However, it couldn't have been more successful.  We were able to make it to the campsite without our GPS, get the tent up (even though 2 of the poles were broken and we had to splint and duct tape one together with our gold swag duct tape), start a fire (Elaine is the fire master and I was her apprentice--I actually got one started!  Woot!), and cook all our meals to perfection.  We went to Turkey Run to hike on Saturday and it was BEAUTIFUL.  We took the rugged trail, so we were going through mud and up little waterfall things and down ladders.  It was a blast.  Jennie from work also met up with us Saturday night which made it even more fun!  There were no major snafus, even though we kept waiting for something bad to happen.  The only bad thing: Syd and I had accidentally left our Mike's Hard Lemonade at Walmart, so we didn't have those refreshments with us :(

We set this up ourselves. #swag

So yeah, pretty crazy summer so far.  In other news:

  • I've been out of my walking boot for a couple weeks now. Woohoo! Can't wait to start running again.
  • Though I usually work with the 2 and 3 year olds at the daycare, I've been able to spend some time in the school-age room, and I LOVE it!  The kids are so great and it's fun getting to do something a little different than normal.
  • In order to get our teaching license, we are required to take a Pearson exam with a language arts, math, social studies, and science subtest.  I took mine last weekend and passed them, so I am pretty stoked to not worry about studying for those anymore, because they were stressing me out!!!
  • Brooke was supposed to move in with us this weekend, but unfortunately she got really sick when she went to Africa and is still recovering. Prayers to her for healing so she can finally be our summer roomie!
Well, that's all, folks! Wishing the best to everyone!
XOXO
